Details of a young girl\u2019s attire, which have survived for nearly four hundred years beneath St Michael\u2019s Cathedral in Veszpr\u00e9m. Alongside a pair of high-heeled slippers unearthed from one of the crypt\u2019s graves, a silk dress decorated with lace has also survived. The fine fabrics suggest a family of high standing. But who might have worn them?<\/p><p>The coffins also held clues for the archaeologists. An inscription formed from star-headed copper rivets on two previously excavated coffin lids helped to identify the final resting place of the family members of Ferenc Bab\u00f3csay, the former captain of Veszpr\u00e9m Castle. According to D\u00f3ra Hegyi, the lead archaeologist on the dig, it is likely that members of the same family were also buried in the graves from the same period that were excavated later. However, this does not yet prove the girl\u2019s identity.<\/p><p>By this time, the high heel already had an eventful history. In West Asia, footwear with heels was used for horse riding: the heel helped to keep the foot secure in the stirrup. This design appeared in Europe at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries and also found its way into men\u2019s fashion. By the mid-17th century, the heels of women\u2019s and men\u2019s shoes had taken on different shapes: men\u2019s shoes typically had chunkier heels, whilst women\u2019s shoes had slimmer ones.<\/p><p>What makes this Veszpr\u00e9m artefact so special is the fact that it has survived. Very few items of clothing and footwear from the 16th and 17th centuries have survived in Hungary. This year, on Sunday 1 November, we celebrate All Saints\u2019 Day: the Catholic Church commemorates all the saints who have been saved. The following day, on All Souls\u2019 Day, we pray for the departed.<\/p><p>The sandal is not currently on display, but there are many other interesting artefacts to be discovered in the archaeological exhibition at the Bir\u00f3-Giczey House. However, the site where it was discovered \u2013 the crypt of the cathedral \u2013 is the <a href=\"https:\/\/whitelabel.skiplin.hu\/hu?default=49dfbd76-f798-48af-93a7-0044726163e5&amp;id=1044b064-8a99-4a73-94e9-3dd55e7a82a6\">\u2018Journey Through a Thousand Years \u2013 The Secret of the Threshold\u2019<\/a> guided tour of the castle.
