Why is it worth visiting the castle district in Veszprém?

The castle district of Veszprém is one of Hungary’s oldest continuously used ecclesiastical centers: it is a place where the era of the founding of the state, Baroque aristocratic grandeur, and the vibrant ecclesiastical life of today converge. The Archdiocese of Veszprém aims to make these largely closed, historic spaces—episcopal residences, chapels, and palaces—accessible to the general public through guided tours and exhibitions.

Visitors can see not only the cathedral, known as the city’s symbol, and St. George’s Chapel, but also sites that were once reserved exclusively for the ecclesiastical and aristocratic elite. These include, for example, the Baroque interior of the Archbishop’s Palace, or the hidden parts of the churches—the tower, crypt, and attic—which are rarely accessible in other Hungarian ecclesiastical centers.

The program includes guided tours focusing on history and art history, archaeological exhibitions, family-friendly interactive exhibits, and themed walks, during which participants can literally get an “inside look” at Veszprém’s Baroque quarter: how the canons lived, where the chapter meetings took place, and what role the bishops and archbishops of Veszprém played in Hungarian history.

A visit to Veszprém is more than just sightseeing: it offers a glimpse into one of the most important sites of Hungary’s religious and cultural heritage. Detailed visitor information, schedules, and ticket prices are available online.
