What is it that remains of a man after all is gone? The castle and churches of Veszprém can answer this question - not only with their architectural wonders, but with the ideas they have carved into the stone.
Have you ever wondered what stories the churches of Veszprém Castle Street can tell? What do the frescoes under restoration reveal? What do the churches of the time of St Stephen or the eternal memories of Prince Imre's vows tell us?
This weekend (23-24 November 2024), the stops on the WIP'24 guided walking tour will reveal curiosities that have not been lost to time, permeating the atmosphere of the Veszprém Castle. The Cathedral of St. Michael and the Franciscan Church await visitors - not only with their architectural treasures, but also with the spiritual and cultural heritage that enriches the common past of all of us.
What is St Michael's Cathedral?
A place where even the stone seems to speak. Why did St Stephen found a bishopric here? How did Veszprém Castle become the castle of the queens? And what did it mean in the symbolism of power? The guide will take us on a journey through the legacy of St Stephen: the founding of bishoprics, the tradition of coronation ceremonies and the centuries of transformation of the main cathedral.
Secrets of the Franciscan Church:
The other highlight of our walk is the present-day St Stephen's Church, formerly the Franciscan Church, where wall excavations and restoration work is ongoing. What does the church wall tell us about its architecture? How did it survive the vicissitudes of time, how did the decisions of kings and princes shape our history? The story of Prince Imre's vows and offerings is also illuminated as the guide reveals the sacred significance of the site.
