The Baroque Jewel Box of Veszprém’s Castle District – Discover the Secrets of the Biró–Giczey House and the Archbishop’s Palace!

The Biró–Giczey House is the Baroque jewel box of Veszprém’s Castle District: a garden, gift shop, and free exhibitions await visitors. Start your themed castle tour here, and step by step, the world of the Archbishop’s Palace, the chapels, and the Cathedral will unfold before you. At which bishop’s desk were the most important decisions made? And who might have owned that Rococo console table, which is held in such high esteem even among curators?

Behind the Scenes: The South Wing of the Archbishop’s Palace

The southern row of salons evokes the spaces of the guest wing, where the interiors are not merely “sets” but are brought to life with their own historical artifacts. The modern history of the archdiocese is traced through the life’s work of notable bishops: it becomes tangible through the eras of Márton Padányi Bíró, Ignác Koller, and Károly Hornig, among others.

Which panel painting has returned after restoration? Where can you see the Renaissance piece that has always belonged to the bishopric? And why is the Vaszary Madonna called a “masterpiece”? You’ll find the answers on site.

“There isn’t an exhibition in the palace; rather, the palace is decorated with its own works of art.”

The rooms undergo subtle rearrangements from time to time as new restoration projects are completed—it’s worth coming back.
