Archbishop's Palace

The Archbishop's Palace is a late Baroque palace with its characteristic layout on the edge of the Castle Hill, consisting of a two-story building with a mansard roof, a basement and a courtyard in the shape of a Cour d’honneur. The plans for the palace were prepared by the master builder Jakab Fellner from Tata, commissioned by Bishop Ignác Koller. The construction began in 1765, and the French-style building was completed in 1776. The ground floor great hall is adorned with illusionistic architectural paintings. The mirrored vaulted ceiling was painted by Johann Cimbal in 1772. The creator of the Baroque stuccoes in the rooms was Giuseppe Orsatti. In 1820, Archduke Joseph met with Alexander I, Tsar of Russia here. Emperor Francis Joseph stayed here in 1908. The ground floor of the palace houses the Archbishopric Library, the Archbishopric Court, and the Archbishopric Archives.

Renovation works are still ongoing in the building.
