GUIDED TOUR OF THE CASTLE DISTRICT IN VESZPRÉM



 The guided tours showcase the Castle District along two different routes.
One walk leads to the medieval and thousand-year-old ecclesiastical heritage, while the other takes you into the Gothic world of the Baroque squares and the Gizella Chapel.

LIGHT AND DEVOTION + FILM SCREENING

A special guided castle tour every Saturday at 2:00 p.m., through August 30, 2026.

A Walk of Light and Reverence + Film Screening

The program begins with a guided walking tour titled “Light and Reverence,” during which visitors can explore the grand halls of the Archbishop’s Palace and the medieval Gizella Chapel. Following the tour, the documentary *1,000 Years of Heritage: The Renewal of Veszprém’s Castle District* will be screened at the Archbishop’s Palace.

Meeting point: Biró–Giczey House, 31 Vár Street. Capacity: maximum 20 people. Online ticket sales are available.

LIGHT AND CONTEMPLATION + PALACE GARDEN

Special guided castle tour from Tuesday to Sunday at 6 pm, until 30 August 2026.

This guided walk takes in the Baroque Archbishop’s Palace, the medieval Gizella Chapel and the palace gardens.

A THOUSAND-YEAR JOURNEY

This route takes you past the oldest landmarks in the Castle District.

St. Michael's Cathedral + crypt + St. George's Chapel

  • Tuesday–Sunday: 4.00 pm
  • A single itinerary taking in the early sites of Hungarian Christianity in Veszprém
  • St Michael’s Cathedral, a defining sacred space in Veszprém
  • St George’s Chapel, whose origins date back to the 9th century, where, according to legend, Prince Saint Imre made his vow
  • 14th-century Gothic sanctuary and the tomb of Bishop Márton Padányi Bíró
  • a site spanning several periods, as confirmed by archaeological excavations

Archbishop's Palace + Gizella Chapel

  • Tuesday–Sunday, 10.30 am and 2.00 pm
  • The history of the Archbishop’s Palace and its state rooms
  • the ceremonial hall, where the painted architecture and the ceiling decoration form the ceremonial centrepiece of the palace
  • the row of salons, where portraits of bishops, Empire-style furniture and the world of historical representation are on display
  • the 13th-century frescoes in the Gizella Chapel, including the surviving cycle depicting the apostles
  • A relic of Queen Gizella, which fulfilled a wish expressed more than two hundred years ago

FILM SCREENING: A 1,000-YEAR LEGACY

This documentary tells the story of the regeneration of the castle district in Veszprém: it offers a behind-the-scenes look at the restoration of the listed buildings, the transformation of the historic structures, and the professional work that has made the castle district accessible to visitors once again.

The programme does not include independent film screenings, guided walks around the castle or tours of the buildings.
