A New Perspective on Veszprém Castle – Renovation, Excavation, and Accessible Heritage

Castle Hill has undergone a comprehensive renovation—and today it can be explored as a unified whole, with new connections.

A particularly exciting event is coming up, as the city will host the “Festival and Night of Architecture” on April 25–26, 2026. The Castle District tours are scheduled to coincide with this event: guided castle tours will depart from the Biró–Giczey House at 4:00 PM on April 25 and at 10:30 AM and 4:00 PM on April 26. This weekend offers a unique opportunity to explore both the city’s architectural programs and the castle’s interior spaces.

As you walk along Vár Street, the tour is not organized as a series of separate stops, but rather comes together as a cohesive narrative. The sites build upon one another, and as you walk, it gradually becomes clear how architecture, church history, and archaeology are interconnected within this same neighborhood. You can explore the Archbishop’s Palace and the Gizella Chapel, St. Michael’s Cathedral, the crypt, and St. George’s Chapel. The weekend guided city walks showcase not only specific sites but also a process that spans centuries.

The archaeological exhibition at the Biró–Giczey House offers a new perspective on the visit: the artifacts unearthed during excavations reveal what lay hidden beneath the surface and how all of this connects to the spaces open to the public today. One of the most telling artifacts from the research is a coin minted by St. Stephen, which creates a special connection between today’s walks and the castle hill’s thousand-year-old Christian history.

Today, Várhegy in Veszprém is not only a revitalized site, but also a route where, as you explore it, you gradually discover why each feature is located exactly where it is.

And when, at a restored historic site, we see not only what has survived but also what research has made legible once again, a question arises: are we seeing the past in such moments, or are we rather beginning to situate ourselves differently in time?
